Forgiveness 101- Part Three THE PURPOSE OF PAIN

When we were newborns, the first nourishment we had was the sweet breast milk of our mother. Yes, breast milk is sweet (don’t ask me how I know) and ever since that first taste, we instinctively gravitate towards sweet and associate it with comfort, nourishment and pleasure. As we got older, little by little, we started incorporating different tastes and began to train our palettes.

It took many of us a long time to develop mature taste buds that can appreciate bitter and some still have not. For those who have, food is alive in ways we never imagined.

Sour flavors gave us an adrenaline rush and salty flavours made us salivate. When they were melded with the familiar sweet, comforting taste we already knew and loved, they made irresistible taste sensations. But one flavor continued to challenge our sensibilities, the flavour of bitter. From medicine to vegetables, we resisted all attempts to allow it to activate its receptor buds on the back of our tongues.

We had no idea what we were missing.

It took many of us a long time to develop mature taste buds that can appreciate bitter and some still have not. For those who have, food is alive in ways we never imagined. Now we enjoy not just bittersweet chocolate and coffee but sautéed spinach, watercress and a host of other vegetables, green, acrid and bursting with essential minerals vital for our health. When paired with other flavors, tasty is elevated to mind blowing delicious and food is elevated to fine cuisine. My personal favorite, carili (an extremely bitter pod vegetable) fried crispy and served with crispy fried fish, dhal (a cumin and roasted garlic flavoured yellow split pea soup) and sada roti (Trinidadian Indian flat bread).

Amazing how the more bitter it is, the more nourishing a plant tends to be. Where would we be without aloe vera, hops, yarrow and chamomile? The more poisonous, the more potent the healing medicine to be found within it, once processed with care and interestingly enough that extends to the painful and deadly venom of certain insects and reptiles. Yet, most people are not endeared by this at all and they certainly are not endeared by the bitter aspects of life, equally healing and nourishing they might be.

We live our lives feeling we have “lost” utopia. But the truth is that the utopia we crave is a figment of a fearful and childish imagination.

It is still taking many of us longer still to appreciate the delicacies of the darker, painful and yes, bitter aspects of life. When it comes to appreciating the nourishment to be had by the challenges of restriction, effort, sadness, loss, pain, and confusion we are still immature children, pushing away our plate of life’s green leafy vegetables and protesting the Divine medicine given to us daily for our benefit. Why?

The reason is simple, we have been socialised to demonise anything that is not pleasurable, sweet, easy flowing and easily conquered. We have been taught an unnatural and contradictory thing; pleasure = bliss and is Divine; while pain = suffering and is evil. For many of us, our introduction to the theological explanation for our existence was that our Creator intended for us to exist in a utopia of pleasure and plenty but sadness and pain come into the world because of evil and disobedience. Therefore pain equals some kind of punishment while pleasure equals Divine reward.

Amazing how the more bitter it is, the more poisonous, the more potent the healing medicine to be found.

We live our lives feeling we have “lost” utopia. But the truth is that the utopia we crave is a figment of a fearful and childish imagination. Pain, loss, sadness, disappointment, black holes, thunderstorms, quicksand, bitter taste buds, prickly plants and venomous creatures were always a vital part of the Grand Architect’s equation. What we lost was the ability to face these aspects of nature with respect and gratitude. What we lost was our fearlessness in the face of death and inner peace that stemmed from acceptance and appreciation that we are forever. Today, we continue to seek utopia by running away from the messages and medicine pain offers.

Out of every horrible situation, something good can happen. The moment you encounter a situation that is so evil, nothing good can come of it then you have discovered something unforgivable but as we discussed before, that is not the nature of the Universe we live in. While I may not be Christian myself, for many people the gruesome death of Jesus resulted in wonderful things for their lives. If African slavery had never happened, Obama would not be President of the United States, calypso, soca, Trini Mas, jazz, blues, rock and roll would not exist.

If you could only taste sweet, would you even know what was truly sweet and what was not?

Want to hear a strange personal admission? Not all of what came out of being sexually abused was bad. It made me the person I am today. I learned from an early age that adults are not always right and are often fearful of the truth and do not always KNOW the truth. That was huge! It liberated me at a young age. I became more compassionate. I became aware of myself and the world in ways most girls my age did not until much later. If I was never abused, I would not be writing this now or speaking of it to others and perhaps helping those who have been through the same situation. Therefore I cannot in all honesty feel absolute anger against my abuser and against God for letting it happen.

Our pagan ancestors understood the fine line and precarious balance of pain and pleasure more than we do today. They took time to consider and integrate the darkness around them. They used pain as part of their rites of passage. Pain and fear were things to be faced, conquered and in the process spark growth of the soul. They were not to be sanitised, demonised or erased. For this reason, they revered Gods of Destruction as well as Gods of Creation with equal fervour. When we erased this more balanced spirituality with one where pain was vilified as punishment from our Creator, instead of a natural part of life, we created a major imbalance in ourselves.

Religious salespeople exploit the personal tragedy, insecurity and hardship of people. From the tele-evangelists to the latest New Age guru and “How To Get Whatever You Want ” self-help authors, their solicitation always involves promises of a life where there is only eternal bliss and joy. In the run up to that, they offer a tranquilizing dogma and membership in a psuedo-utopian brotherhood which often “love bombs” new converts and promises to hide them from the complex realities of life, especially change. At the times of great uncertainty and despair, this seems like a wonderful relief. A world ruled by an unchanging God with unchanging principles and an afterlife that will also be unchangingly pleasant and perfect.

Eternal bliss like eternal torment contradicts the Law of Freewill. If we were unable to feel anything but happiness, we would be robotic Stepford Wife creatures of the Divine. The other Universal Law contradicts is Polarity, otherwise known as Contrast which is a universal essential to create a point of reference.

But a major spiritual awakening occurs when people realize they would be bored stiff in “Christian heaven”. They want challenges. They want an eternity of new epic adventures with nail biting, cliff hangers and adrenaline rushes. They want to push the boundaries and grow in the process. They want to continue to have freewill in the next life. They want to be able to use that freewill to throw a spanner in the works. Not even the most benign, politically correct, fluffy children’s programme set in a fun, cushy fairy world is without some kind of contrast or challenge that needs resolution to spark a learning curve in the child watching it. When you arrive at a stage in your spiritual development where eternal bliss becomes not only intellectually lazy but beyond childish, you are ready to appreciate why pain is not an evil or an unfair thing.

The older, pagan religions recognise the Law of Polarity in the Universe and celebrate creation as well as destruction as equally Divine.

We were designed to grow and no growth can happen without polarity, contrast and momentum and anything else is unnatural and nightmarish. Let me explain:

Imagine if you suddenly found yourself in a dimension that resembled the infinity white studio background used in commercials or the “Loading Programme” in the movie The Matrix. The ground, ceiling, everything is white and it stretches on forever, flat, featureless. You can run for a mile and still when you looked around, everything looked the same, in fact, you lose all sense of direction and in no time at all, a little of your sanity. Then suddenly you see a spot that is darker than everything else around it. You will eagerly make for that spot with great relief and it will become your point of reference.

Both extremes of a life of pleasure only and pain only rob us our universal reference, a true sense of and appreciation for our existence which is essential if we are to actively chart our destiny. Pleasure without contrast or purpose leads to stagnation, sickness and ultimately suffering. Pain with no contrast or purpose leads to the exact same thing.
.

If every experience you had since you were born was pleasant and on an even keel, you would suffer from amnesia about much of your past. Days would blend into the other, featureless and uneventful. You will also cease to be creative for there is no necessity to do so. The same would apply if everything you experienced since infancy was painful. A starving child in Sudan, born into pain has no memory of day to day just a featureless span of monotone suffering and is unable to envision anything new. Believe it or not, a spoiled child in Beverly Hills who never had a single challenge in life and lived in effortless luxury also experiences the same creative inertia, amnesia and yes suffering. For the child in Sudan, the suffering is visceral. For the overly coddled Beverly Hills teen, it is emotional.

Pain is not evil, it is natural and we were designed to feel it for a reason just as we were designed with our bitter taste buds. So the first thing you need to do is stop demonising your Divinely created pain receptors and instead, thank God for this built in mechanism to deter, caution and slow down our push forward.

Without contrast we have no idea what is up or down, black or white and all the shades in between. If everything you ate tasted sweet, would you even know what sweet truly is? Add a little sour to the sweet or bitter and suddenly, sweet has dimension and can be measured and fully appreciated. Contrast gives shape and scope to the Universe. It also assists in our ability to remember which is just as vital as our ability to imagine, for one cannot happen without the other.

Pain is not evil, it is natural and we were designed to feel it for a reason just as we were designed with our bitter taste buds. So the first thing you need to do is stop demonising your Divinely created pain receptors instead, thank God for it! How else would you know you have stepped on a thorn? How else you would know you are doing something that you should proceed with greater caution doing? Pain whether physical, emotional or mental is a built in mechanism to deter, caution and slow down our push forward. When the pain hits, you can choose to stop or continue. Sometimes when you continue, pleasure follows.

Just like bitter turns sweet to sensational, the most blissful sensation we can experience in our human bodies, orgasm, is a complex mixture of pleasure nerves enhanced with pain nerves firing in perfect harmony. Without that depth pain provides, pleasure alone feels as unbearable, like being mercilessly tickled until numbness sets in or something so sickly sweet, it is nauseating. True bliss happens when pleasure and pain are experienced with purpose and balance leading to a sustainable experience.

By surrendering to the natural childbirth experience more women are experiencing orgasm (bliss) during childbirth. Watch a news report on this growing phenomenon here.

For millenia, women were told by the Church that they were cursed with childbirth pain by God. The same Church persecuted and murdered thousands of women for the secret art of midwifery. These wise women knew how to aid women in childbirth to have a natural, complete and spiritual experience in the process. They were replaced by callous male doctors who treated with the female’s physiology as a painful problem, not a beautiful blessing.

Today, the medical world is re-discovering the benefits of midwives and doulas. Natural birth methods that allow women to truly surrender to the experience has resulted in an increasing number of women experiencing orgasm (pain & pleasure in perfect harmony) during childbirth. Could it be that as women rediscover their bodies and reclaim their sexuality and right to pleasure free themselves of shame, we are literally reversing how we “perceive” an experience that was seen as “suffering” and punishment? If so, this is small indication that pain is not suffering and not anti-bliss. It is all a matter of perception. We have the power to live in complete bliss, while experiencing pain.

We cannot ignore that the dark, dangerous, destructive side of life is part of us and essential to the experience of life. We try to stamp it out but it always manifests itself.

We may not like our intestinal bacteria, maggots and leeches but they serve a purpose. So too do earthquakes, serial killers and the bastard who cut you off in traffic. They exist because not only is there is free will and self-actualisation but polarity and momentum. The more you understand those mechanisms, the less suffering you will feel because you will appreciate that pain and pleasure working together create movement, change and growth. You are part of that growth whether you like it or not, so you might as well learn how to like it instead of fearing it, railing against it and finding religious ways to bury your head in the sand. You are an eternal work in progress and the pleasure/pain cycle, the Yin/Yang, the positive, negative poles create the currents that make your life and growth possible.

Break Your Pleasure Addiction!

Millions are suffering from seratonin and dopamine overload because of entitlement, ingratitude and addiction to pleasure that has led to a low pain threshold.

We are addicted to pleasure. Not bliss (which is a perfect balance of pleasure and pain and an enlightened perception of things) but the one-note, one dimensional, childish taste of cloying sweetness. The result? Seratonin overload! We are literally ill from sloth, apathy and a general feeling of purposelessness. Millions complain that they are unable to “feel” anything. Millions more are depressed even if they have no reason to be sad. Sadness (emotional pain) with no purpose to it! Now that is suffering! People are being born with lower and lower pain thresholds and expect such an unfair, unnatural amount of pleasure and ego codling by others that of course life and people will always be disappointing. We have people with every conceivable comfort, loving friends and family, opportunity and influence feeling depressed about their life. Why?

The Law of Polarity together with the Law of Consequence demand that if we go to the extreme one way, the other side must get more extreme to compensate. When the “easy life” quickly becomes bland, boring it leads us to behavioural extremes to add some kind of meaning to a featureless, effortless existence. Some of the ways people stabilise out this pain/pleasure imbalance are harmless. Many demonstrate their conquest over the illusion that pain = suffering through body art, piercings, BDSM sex and extreme sports. Teenagers choose to delve into beautiful sadness of Sylvia Plath, emo and Goth Culture. It scares and scandalises the living daylights out of the “normal” folk who have forgotten of a time when their ancestors willingly submitted to sad, scary, painful experiences and delved into the darkness. However today most people do it without any kind of spiritual rationale and sense of balance, trust in the Universe/Creator/Self and so, fall prey to dangerous extremes; addiction to hard drugs, self-mutilation and unhealthy thrills. We now have increasing numbers of young people who need to cut, starve, scare themselves or push their bodies to physical extremes, just to feel alive.

The Law of Polarity together with the Law of Consequence demand that if we go to the extreme one way, the other side must get more extreme to compensate. When the “easy life” quickly becomes bland, boring it leads us to behavioural extremes to add some kind of meaning to a featureless, effortless existence.

One of the benefits of pain, we have discounted is that it forces us to slow down. Pain is life’s yellow and red traffic light. It is our cue to proceed carefully, surrender, let go, retrace our steps, rest and take time out to heal. Unfortunately, being driven by our pleasure addiction, we have found ingenious ways to circumvent pain with technology. If a boulder stands in our way, we blast it with dynamite. If we invade the ecosystem and upset the balance that keeps a virus in check, we find ways to kill the virus so we can continue invading where we are not supposed to. We live in a world where we no longer have to do things the slow, hard and painstaking way because everything conveniently designed around instant gratification and avoiding hard work. As a result we do not stop to consider the impact of our actions on ourselves, others and our planet.

Many who are rich and famous struggle to deserve the success, admiration and power they have. They know somewhere deep down they did not really earn it. So they feel constant guilt, leading them to throw it all away and ruin their lives to the morbid satisfaction of those who resent their good fortune.

When we move through life with such haste while addicted to pleasure and feeling overly entitled we often do not notice the hand of God/Universal Laws at work and the contribution and sacrifice of others who bring what we need into our lives. Is it any wonder we have to dig deeper to feel grateful?

Many who are rich and famous struggle to deserve the success, admiration and power they have. They know somewhere deep down they did not really earn it. So they feel constant guilt, leading them to throw it all away and ruin their lives to the morbid satisfaction of those who resent their good fortune. Their state of inner lack and powerlessness disables their ability to be grateful and see their wealth as a gift of power to be used for the benefit of mankind. On the flip side of this, others take what they have for granted and seek more than their fair share at the expense of others. Powerlessness and lack are also driving their actions. Guilt and greed are siblings that come from egg of ingratitude. Lack of awareness and gratitude for the difficult processes that make our comfort possible and taking responsibility for the power we have, makes us extremely entitled and easily affronted for no good reason or extremely apathetic and discontent for no reason at all. We experience suffering far more than necessary as a result and the harder it is to forgive.

Amazing freedom awaits you my friend when you let go of your pleasure addiction and “punishment” mentality. You will discover the ability to delight in things others find tedious achieving what many call “Zen”; the ultimate acceptance of how things are. Many of your feelings of “unfairness” and “affront” will become mere illusions. This is my friends is the source of forgiveness. Before you can forgive anyone, you need to “forgive” or accept the entire Universal experience and its Architect. Yes, I said it! You need to forgive God for putting you through this experience.

No slow painful climb means no thrilling acceleration. So just accept things and enjoy the ride!

Like that painful immunization injection or exposure to chicken pox your loving mother made you endure, the negative aspects of our Universe are not designed to permanently ruin our existence but perfect our soul and build our antibodies. You are fortunate to be given this opportunity to learn and grow, no matter how hard the lesson and medicine might be. Nobody is doing anything to you! Nobody can! You are an eternal part of a Universe that allows polarity. You attracted it. You can choose how to perceive it. You can change it by exercising your freewill. You can heal from anything for you are eternal. You can experience bliss in the bitter medicine because you know the bitter taste is just as much a blessing as the sweet taste. You want multi-dimensional flavor in order to keep learning and growing. You accept that this momentum is made possible because of polarity. A roller coaster would not be much fun if it was level. The slow painful ascent is essential for the euphoric descent. Together they create a blissfully exciting life experience. Just let go and enjoy the ride!

So hopefully now you can begin accessing the knowledge and thinking that helps you gain the Forgiveness Power Up. But want to know why I call it a Power Up? That’s next.

Forgiveness 101- Part Two- How Could A Loving God Allow This?

If you have read the first part of this series, we have reached to a difficult juncture in the process.

For many, the dilemma of human suffering despite an All Knowing, Loving Creator is a serious spiritual obstacle. It was once for me (to the point where I was once agnostic), in my youth. Even if you have resolved the question by believing there is no God, I still ask you to read on. Not because I want to convince you there IS a God (I humbly admit I can’t) but so that you know there is another option to resolve this spiritual roadblock. Your candle won’t burn any less just because I light another but rather our shared space will only get brighter.

There is a third option between Option A. God is a sadistic asshole or apathetic being who wills that people suffer to fulfill his master plan and Option C. There is no God.

One of the many "Lost Boys" of Sudan.

I saw a NBC Dateline documentary on Hell and they interviewed three people who experienced so much hell on earth that they have changed their views about the existence of hell in the afterlife. One was a young Sudanese boy made to watch his sister and mother gang raped and killed before being forced into the militia at eight and subjected to beatings, torture, starvation until running away and becoming one of the many refugees (Called Lost Boys of Sudan), before being later adopted by an American family. The last was a nun who was in Guatemala during the military uprising. She was captured and falsely accused of being a spy; gang raped; burnt all over her body with lit cigarettes.

They now believe that there is no need for any hell in the afterlife because (1) we humans create our own hell right now and (2) despite being subjected to unspeakable tortures, all three have forgiven their tormentors and are at a place of deep inner peace and unconditional love. The nun even returned to Guatemala to help those who suffered like her. They said, if they puny humans are capable of forgiving so much, a Higher Divine Being could do no less to miniscule creatures that cannot actually harm It. Why would it need to hold an everlasting grudge against Its own children and torture them forever in hell? It brought tears to my eyes.

Sister Ortiz, who is a Roman Catholic Ursuline nun, was teaching Mayan children in the Guatemala highlands when she was abducted and gang-raped repeatedly. She also received 111 cigarette burns on her back according to a doctor whom she said examined her afterward. She is now an outspoken voice against torture internationally.

The ability to forgive must first start with a Creator who is capable of forgiving all and/or at least the premise that nothing is unforgivable. When people place limits (and no one can place limits) on an Almighty God’s ability to forgive or the possibilities of an infinite Universe we place limits on our ability as well. Remember the “unforgiveable sin” is also an “inconceivable sin”. Once someone has been given true proof of God by God, there is no way they can deny it.

Achieving the Forgiveness Power Up is actually also a matter of being able to understand WHY God can forgive us, yes even Hitler, so unconditionally and eternally. Does God know something vital to the process that we don’t? Only way to figure it out is to return to the Laws, that “game programming” that governs our existence.

Torment inflicted without purpose or the ability to choose before, during or after the fact is a deliberate contravention of Universal Laws. Thanks to Freewill and Consequence, the same laws that make suffering possible make redemption possible, even after the fact. What PURPOSE does his eternal suffering serve? The answer is none.

We covered the Law of Consequence (Attraction) in Part 1. We also have the ability, to do anything we so choose! Even kill ourselves and others. This is called The Law of Freewill. No supernatural force will come and prevent you from standing in front of a bus if that is what you want to do. However, you will face the consequences…being squashed flat and leaving this existence because of the Law of Consequence (Attraction). Now, if The Grand Architect of these two laws, is truly just and benevolent. some provision must be made so that that Freewill and Consequence are also kept in check and nobody is ever made to suffer needlessly.

What is needless suffering?

It is torment inflicted without purpose or the ability to choose before, during or after the fact. In order for needless, endless torment to exist, there would have to be deliberate contravention of Universal Laws. Let me explain:

Let us imagine if Hitler, thanks to the Law of Consequence has to experience equal reprisal for his actions. Let us say he is made to live out the suffering of every single person his master plan touched. For thousands of years, he is put through every single tragic loss, torture, hunger, fear, rejection, inhumane indignity and what resulted from it. What next? You want more? Why? Other than satisfy the Law of Consequence: Action = Equal Reaction, what PURPOSE does his eternal suffering serve? The answer is none.

The reason so many have such a deep spiritual crisis with God and human suffering because they are taught we only have THIS LIFETIME to exercise our free will, learn, grow and get it right. So when human suffering happens in this split second of a life or unfortunate circumstances that make us waste this small amount of time we have on this earth, it is very hard to excuse those we hold responsible for it, ourselves, others and God.

Eternal torment as a result of no choice is a childish, base and unnatural premise. It is clear it was created from the darkest regions of the human brain in order to threaten others with its inhumane and abnormal premise. What makes it all the more ridiculous is that we are living entities. The very essence of life is to learn, adapt, grow and change. The very same Freewill that allows us to do bad things, allows us to respond to pain and suffering differently if we so choose. We are perfectly free to choose to learn, grow and change from pain or perceived punishment. This in turn because of the Law of Consequence will attract a different and more positive outcome. Therefore, the drug dealer who because of the Law of Consequence ends up in jail does not have to exist in a “punished state” and become more of a monster. He still has a choice! He can choose instead to empower himself with education, leadership and making amends to his community. This in turn, will result in different consequences, positive ones not just for himself but others too. Isn’t the ingenuity of our Grand Architect wonderful! Thanks to the Laws of Freewill and Consequence, the same laws that make suffering possible make redemption possible.

If they puny humans are capable of forgiving so much suffering a Higher Divine Being could do no less to miniscule creatures that cannot actually harm It. Why would it need to hold an everlasting grudge against Its own children and torture them forever in hell?

It is entirely your choice how you react to a situation, even after the fact. You always have total control, despite attracting a bad outcome. It’s true! It is your choice how a situation is perceived and what you will allow the resulting outcome to be. This further reinforces so clearly why nobody is a victim. Even if it means facing up to the final bullet to end your life with acceptance instead of fearful, helpless protests. The beauty of our existence is that we can co-create a bright new reality before, during and after the fact. In that light, it makes the suffering we experience take on a whole other shape and form. But that is just the beginning.

I promise what I am going to tell you next will blow your mind!

Time is not linear. Everything in time is happening as we speak, past, present and future.

Exercising your right to use the Power of Freewill actually re-creates events perhaps not scientifically but certainly in your own time-thread/perception. If you want, we can go all Einstein and look at it from a scientific point of view. In quantum physics time is not linear. There is no actual past, present or future, everything is happening all at the same time, just like the Back To The Future movies. Let me explain with something personal.

Today, when speak about being abused as child, it often feels like I speak of someone else. Why? Through lots of on-going hard work have literally reversed the effects of the abuse I experienced, so it is almost like if it never really happened to me. I do not feel like victim. I do not act like victim. For this reason I am not a victim. It simply is not a major aspect of my reality. If instead I were to act like an abused victim today, then I am making the abuse by that young man in Mrs. Sealy’s house 21 years ago more real. The only way we’ll know for sure is of course, if we invent a time machine.

Is that really tripping you out? Yup, it tripped me out too.

I am not talking about ignoring the pain or suppressing hidden anger. I am talking about allowing yourself to feel all those things and still come out of it on the other side saying,“In the scope of my ability to influence my imprint on eternal time what is this really?”

But then again, the reverse is also true. Have you ever met someone who always blames their past? You hear them say things like,
“Well because my mother did this to me that is why I am a failure today” and they keep saying this way into adulthood, long past the age of personal responsibility. Sometimes when you find out exactly what their mother actually did, it is so trivial you want to burst out laughing at them. But in their mind space and time space they have created this HUGE problem the size of the Rwandan genocide. In their own mind they have actually made past events worse. Once again, the only way we’ll know for sure is, if we invent a time machine.

Exercise your freewill to change one thing now and you change both the past and the future.

Now I am not talking about ignoring the pain or suppressing hidden anger. I am talking about allowing yourself to feel all those things and still come out of it on the other side saying,

“In the scope of my ability to influence my imprint on time what is this really?”

This brings us to the other thing that puts human suffering into perspective- the infinite nature of time.

It is downright depressing to believe billions were created just to suffer and that’s all! Which is probably why more than ever, people are accepting that a conscious part of ourselves exists infinitely longer after this bodily shell is dust, even the non-religious for purely scientific reasons- END or “Energy Never Dies” (like the Black Eye Peas new album title). Even Einstein himself believed something essential of us must live on.

Those who believe in eternity of existence can say, "Suffering is perception" or "Fear not those who can kill your body but not destroy your soul," This ultimately makes endless compassion and forgiveness possible.

If we do live on eternally, a severe beating is no more damaging than a paper cut. God becomes less like a villain and more like the mother who allows her child to practice and fall down from their bike and get painful cuts, scraps and even sprains. She loves the child and knows that is part of the learning process. More importantly, in light of the long years of that child’s life, a scrape or sprain is nothing. In just five years, the child will not even remember it. The only difference is how much YOU make of it. Knowing we in fact have eternity to exercise our freewill, learn, grow and perfect our souls, changes things a lot.

So let us assess all of this: 1.We are not victims and it ourselves we actually need to forgive 2. We have total power to affect change before, during and even after an event 3. Exercising this power actually bends and re-shapes how we perceive the event perhaps (when we get a time machine) even altering the event itself. 4. We have an eternity to live and nothing can really scar or destroy us in an infinite millennia of life experiences, with time we can heal from anything if we so choose.

Absorb these four principles and you are ready to access the Power Up of Forgiveness! You will be ready to finally, fully appreciate why spiritual teachers have been trying so hard to help us understand we can forgive indefinitely and “love our enemies” and “fear not those who cannot kill your soul” and just lay down thei r lives and turn the other cheek and go on hunger strikes and live so fearlessly. This is only possible when you can say:

“I am not victim. I always have a choice. I choose to take responsibility. I choose to react to this pain with positivity and I can because I know for certain I have lost nothing in the grand scheme of things. I know for certain I am a powerful and eternal being and this person has not and cannot really hurt or destroy me or my loved ones. I know for certain I am still unconditionally loved and so I still love myself unconditionally and forgive unconditionally, it takes nothing from me to do it but offers everything to the person who receives it because it allows them the chance to also take responsibility.”

And MEAN it!

Only people who can do this can go and embrace the killer of their child without feeling emotionally compromised. Those who have perfected it (I sure ain’t one of them! Still just a work in progress) can actually lay down their life for someone who did nothing but hate and seek to harm them.

This part, believe it or not is the easy one because academically, philosophically and theologically it fits. Still, when that drunk driver paralyzes your wife from the neck down, these Laws do not necessarily make the pain of it easy to process! In fact, in that moment if someone were to come preaching this, you are more likely to break their nose with your fist… justifiably so.

So, why does bitch ass pain have to exist in the first place?

Hang tight! That's coming next!

The Alien Is Back!

Do enjoy my series on Forgiveness, starting with the one posted below!

Yes I am back after a little hiatus!

Forgiveness 101- Part One, Personal Responsibility

Here’s the dilemma you face- you know that there is something about forgiveness that is supposed to be essential your personal happiness. Self-satisfied, octogenarians and centenarians swear it had something to do with their longevity and ability to face the great adventure beyond this one with bravery and no regrets about this life.

The thing is, you are also an intelligent person and you cannot be guilt-tripped or bullshitted into forgiving those who have hurt you. In fact, you probably have long realized that the kind of forgiveness you’ve been taught since you were a child feels more like swallowing a spiky golf ball or sinking into a helpless, “What else can I do?” mind-set. It started when your mother or father forced you to “kiss and make-up” before you were ready to do so, with your siblings and cousins who made you see blue murder.

Remember when your parents FORCED you to kiss and make-up before you were ready, for their benefit more than anything? Does forgiveness still feel like that for you today?

Isn’t it any wonder that today forgiveness feels like denial of your hurt and pain and allowing someone to “get off the hook” because of family, spiritual or religious obligation. How many times have you wanted badly to hang on to your anger and distrust when you remember,
“Geez God died for me, so I have no choice but to forgive this asshole!”
Then a lingering sense of injustice keeps nagging you despite your noble displays of absolution. It keeps reminding you that despite what you think, you have not actually forgiven anything.

So let me start by saying that is not the kind of forgiveness I am going to discuss. In fact, the kind of forgiveness, I want to speak about is not a duty you perform against your feelings nor is it even a long-term process. If you were theologically compelled because Jesus said to forgive seventy times seven and then he set the bar really high by forgiving the people who tortured and killed him and left you wondering,
“How on earth am I supposed to follow that?”
I am here to give you a little help on how to arrive at the same state of enlightenment that enables the great spiritual minds of human history like to do such things.

Forgiveness is not something you do against your will, nor is it a process. It is actually a vital PowerUp in this video game of life.

It starts by understanding what forgiveness really is.

Forgiveness is a spiritual “power-up” you attain in this video game of life. This game of life comes with certain Universal Laws or “game programming”. The secret to the Forgiveness Power up is becoming skilled in positive use of the same Universal Laws or game programming that allows setbacks, pain and injustice to happen in the game plot. Hopefully, when you have done this, it will not be a question of whether or not you are able to forgive. You would have already arrived at a state where forgiveness is simply an inevitable expression that rewards you most of all and yes…others too. So, here we go!

The Law of Consequence (Attraction)

I never really understood forgiveness until I grasped the concept that every action attracts a resulting complementary reaction and this is incontrovertible and indiscriminate. We are all interrelated and nobody is ever a complete victim of anyone’s actions. Ah yes, Dr. Phil, as much as I despise his corniness, he has this saying,
“You teach people how to treat you”
The older I get, the more I realize it is true.

Yes, I know we live in the age of “victim rights”. You are not supposed to blame the poor judgment of a woman who wears a dental floss outfit, gets drunk and walks down a lonely street with a man she barely knows and ends up being raped. Nope don’t you dare call her irresponsible! For some reason the same “sense of personal accountability for choosing certain actions” you apply to the man for committing the rape does not apply to her. Well, that is counterintuitive in every sense.

When we look at most things like that we can see how (1) A lack of self-love (2) A lack of trust and confidence in A Higher Power/Our Power Within The Universe (3) Negative thoughts (4) Negative actions and (5) Ignorance (deliberate or not), attract bad results, I’d say hmmm…. 100% of the time.

But what about things like the Holocaust or the genocide in Rwanda and child abuse. It’s very difficult to wrap your mind around the concept that the people who suffered were getting the consequences for their actions. What kind of action could ever warrant the scale of such mind boggling barbarity? Surely, these are “unforgiveable unspeakable evils”.

But are they really unforgivable and unspeakable? Or are we just trying to dismiss them instead of honestly exploring how such things happen. First of all, what is truly unforgivable?

In order for something to be unforgivable, it means it must be purely evil. But under close inspection, very few things in this life are purely evil. In fact, the greatest spiritual leaders from Jesus to Buddha agree that there is only one unforgivable action. This action is usually described as blasphemy against the Holy Spirit or rejection of a pure state enlightenment once having attained it. Now this is serious stuff right here. This ain’t the pedestrian,
“Doh tek de Lord’s name in vain!” or laughing heartedly at Monty Python’s portrayal of Christ on the cross telling Peter,
“Hey, I can see my house from up here!”
This also isn’t about rejecting your religion or someone else’s out of disbelief, doubts, disenchantment, delinquency or dissatisfaction.

What is universally accepted as the "Unforgiveable Sin" is also the "Inconceivable Sin"

I am talking of the kind of fall from grace where you have no disbelief, doubts, disenchantment, delinquency or dissatisfaction whatsoever. You have actually been in God’s presence; and have PROOF of it! It is arriving at a state of pure enlightenment where you know and experience Divine love and yet purposefully, with malice choose to act like it never happened. In order to do that, that individual must be so unimaginably warped, I cannot even imagine! Perhaps this is why it is so unforgivable for it is also inconceivable. Not even the reputed cosmic villain Satan (if you believe in such a creature) can deny God’s existence; petulantly challenge him though he might.

Recently I have had the chance to forgive the young man who sexually abused me when I was nine. Is he pure evil? No. That is just a convenient way of dismissing an unpleasant reality. He was a disturbed person who upon reaching the age of maturity did not take responsibility for being abused himself. He allowed himself to be a pawn of circumstance and acted out his twisted feelings on me.

The laws of the Universe are unbiased. It doesn’t matter how innocent and cute a baby is, if it crawls out of a multi-story window it will fall. You cannot get angry at The Law Gravity for that and I cannot get angry at the Law of Attraction nor its Architect for what happened to me.

Now we come to the really difficult questions: Did I ask for the abuse? Why did God allow such a thing to happen to me?

Honestly, I don’t think I asked for the abuse, at least not knowingly. I say not knowingly because unknowingly I was thinking and acting in such a way to attract a molester to me and my parent was thinking and acting in such a way to leave me vulnerable to that situation. So while I did not consciously ask to be abused, I was in fact a child who was feeling lost, abandoned, insecure and fearful and I had a parent who reinforced those feelings and placed me in unsafe situations.

I fit the role molesters go after perfectly and I was in a scenario that made it easy to do and cover up. It was bound to happen! In fact, I know the “molestation scerarios” and “molestor profile” so well now I can walk into someone’s home and after some observation, I can tell with a fair amount of certainty if a child is at risk for sexual abuse from a relative or family friend. In such situations, it is never a question of if but when. An inattentive seal mother of a cute baby seal will have her seal eaten no matter how cute it is and a killer whale will eat the seal no matter how long it plays with it. Law of nature!

But what about things like the Holocaust? How can an entire group of people attract such a disaster to themselves? Before I get painted with the anti-Semite brush and come across like I am saying Jews brought it on themselves. Let me say what happened is a stain on humanity. Let’s not forget all the gypsies, Slavs, Poles, homosexuals and other ethnic groups who died in death camps. I am certainly not going to say they deserved it either. The same goes for the Tutsis that were slaughtered by the thousands in Rwanda.

In both Germany and Rwanda, the genocide was in fact a climax of generations of underlying resentment and building hatred. It didn’t just happen overnight!

However, if mob psychology exists, then it must also work both ways. One group must collectively, blindly unite and become The Persecutor and another must also just as blindly accept collectively the role of The Persecuted. All wars and genocides are like active volcanoes. If two or more groups of people engage in a prolonged unhealthy relationship you will have a pressure cooker situation that will erupt. Again it is not a question of if but when and there are so many WARNING SIGNS before a volcano erupts.

In both Germany and Rwanda, the genocide was in fact a climax of generations of underlying resentment and building hatred. It didn’t just happen overnight! In Germany and most of Europe, anti-Semitism was already millennia old. In Rwanda, tribal strife was generations old. The less sensational truth is that both sides apathetically accepted and played out and maintained these roles on ever increasing levels until it reached its inevitable climax. What we saw was not the whole disaster, just the end result of a long rumbling volcano threatening to erupt.

At anytime, during its long gestation, either side could have turned the tide. Let us not forget that even during the face of such rabid hatred and violence, there were stellar examples of how capable people can be to prevent this from happening. Even in the face of violence, glimmers of the loftier human spirit were on display, which means it was always there.

If people could act with such humanity, enlightenment and bravery during the hell, it means even more people could have prevented the disaster before it reached to that stage. When people exist in a self-imposed world of lack and powerlessness and they do not have enough self-love to demand better, that is the true disaster taking place! That is not evil. It is merely unfortunate and shameful.

During the Holocaust, there were Jews so respected and loved by their non-Jewish friends and neighbours and Jews whose spirit was so strong they fought and saved not only themselves but thousands of their Jewish brothers and sisters. The same goes for the many non-Jewish Germans who hid and assisted Jews during that time and of course we all know the true story in the Academy Award winning Hotel Rwanda. Nobody can dehumanize a person who refuses to give up their humanity and allows it shine so clearly no oppressor can drown that light.

If people could act that way during the hell, it means even more people could have prevented the disaster before it reached to that stage.

Let us look at what has been happening in our own country in Trinidad between Afro-Trinis and Indo-Trinis. God forbid it, but if mass violence were to erupt between the races, whose fault is it? If an Afro-Trinidadian or Indo-Trinidadian leader hungry for power, saw the opportunity to feed on the already existing racism and fears of people effectively enough to start ethnic cleansing, whose fault is it? Don’t we have countless chances to bridge the divide and there are more than enough loving, smart and tolerant people to stop such a thing before it escalates?

When things like this happen it is only because we collectively let them happen. So really there is no “unspeakable, unforgivable evil” taking place. The only real tragedy is that good people did nothing or not enough, soon enough. Each individual still has to look at themselves and ask,
“What did I do to prevent this?”
When people exist in a self-imposed world of lack and powerlessness and they do not have enough self-love to demand better, that is the true disaster taking place! That is not evil. It is merely unfortunate and shameful.

That’s it! Your first skill to getting the Forgiveness Power Up. Understand, appreciate and then live with the knowledge that the Laws of Consequence are unapologetic, unbiased and unavoidable whether it is one person attracting a negative consequence from another person, or entire society attracting a negative consequence from years of their own negative actions or one or a few people attracting a negative consequence by deliberately or not, supporting a society’s negative attributes.

When wrong is done to you, it is YOU that you must first ask,
“Why, how, what did I do or not do to allow this to happen to me?”

It sounds harsh, but it can be the single most liberating experience of your life to find out the person you need to forgive is YOURSELF.

Sometimes the answer is as simple as the horned wife admitting:

“Actually, I saw it coming but I did not do anything to stop it. I was so low in self-esteem or I never really allowed myself to love my man for who is truly is and appreciate his needs. I was in love with an illusion of my own making.”
So she resolves never to fall into that trap again and she never does, making herself and a lucky man very happy as a result.

Sometimes the answer is not so simple.

The mother whose child is raped and killed by a serial killer for instance, after mourning that unbelievable loss, going through hell, coming to the realization that:

“I not only contribute to a society that allows such predators to develop unnoticed by parents, teachers, community until it is too late but I also contribute to a government with a system that allows such offenders to go free knowing fully-well they are a threat to society. How could I, as a mother have ever consented to play along, thinking it would not ever come back to bite me or my little girl! How was it I was ever fooled into complacently placing blind trust in a system that is not working, essentially leaving my daughter’s safety up to luck of the draw? And guess what? When you leave things like that to luck, your luck can run out. I cannot believe I have not taken this seriously before!”

Suddenly she is awakened and for the first time makes the connection. She can no longer be a by-standing citizen hoping for the best. She becomes an activist for early detection of sexually predatory traits in kids through mandatory psychological screening in schools. She advocates for better follow-up treatment for victims of molestation, particularly males, who have a higher chance of becoming predators themselves. She fights for stricter law enforcement policies and permanent incarceration of repeat offenders. She supports mandatory sexual education and self-protection programmes to empower children to detect and resist potential threats and not feel ashamed to report it.

This kind of personal responsibility is actually not in the best interests of the powers that be. You see, it benefits them more when people continue to believe they are victims of random evil. They want us all to be beholden to an unjust, inhumane, earth-hostile system yet constantly surprised and go ‘Why Me?” when it fails us. They want us to continue blindly making decisions out of pride, selfishness, greed, ignorance and fear instead of contentment, responsibility, knowledge and love, thinking it will never come back to haunt us or our loved ones.

The mother in Morvant who wails to the television reporter when her son is gunned down by a trigger happy police officer did not make the connection between that and the stolen stereo system she enjoys in her house. The person afflicted with cancer, does not make the connection between it and a lifetime of nursing grudges and other toxic emotions or not loving themselves enough to screen regularly because of genetic predisposition to the disease. The parent refuses to make a connection between his own dishonesty, fear and unrealistic, intolerant religious approach to sexuality and the unwanted pregnancy of his teen daughter. Consumers do not connect their own greed to the current financial crisis.
Instead, they blame Satan or “those people” or “bad fortune” or “the opposing political party” for victimizing them.

Empowered people first learn how to forgive themselves in order to forgive others with maximum ease. Victims on the other hand feel self-pity and pretend to forgive others… but only to please.

In Part 2 we answer the dreaded- “How could God allow this?!” question. Hang tight!
